Finnish marine propulsion specialist Steerprop will supply its next-generation contra-rotating propeller (CRP) technology for Estonia’s first fully electric passenger ferry, currently under construction at Polish shipyard CRIST SA for the Estonian State Fleet.
The 95-metre vessel, designed by LMG Marin, will be equipped with two Steerprop SP 25 CRP units powered by permanent magnet motors. The propulsion system is designed to deliver high thrust and improved mechanical efficiency in both ice and open water, while reducing energy consumption.
The next-generation CRP technology introduces pressure lubrication as standard for smaller units, replacing immersion lubrication to reduce mechanical losses and increase mechanical efficiency by approximately 3.5 percentage points.
The ferry will operate on renewable shore power, with energy stored in a 3 MWh battery system. Auxiliary biodiesel generators will provide backup power during severe weather and emergency operations. Designed to Ice Class 1B, the vessel will be capable of operating in ice up to 60 cm thick.
“The latest Steerprop CRP development has resulted in a propulsor with unique efficiency and thrust performance, and one that offers an even greater perormance boost for vessels operating in ice conditions. Steerprop is pleased to widen its installed base in Estonia, where we already operate four double-ended ferries with Steerprop CRP propulsors on the Saaremaa and Hiiumaa routes.”
Markku Miinala, Steerprop Cruise & Ferry Segment Director.
The propulsion equipment is scheduled for delivery in late 2027, with the ferry expected to enter service in late 2028.
The design and construction contract is valued at EUR 49.93 million. The project is co-funded by the European Union’s Modernisation Fund, contributing EUR 28 million, and Estonia’s CO₂ quota trading mechanisms.
