The shortsea operator CLdN has ordered two new 6,700-lane-metre roll-on/roll-off (RoRo) vessels from South Korea’s HD Hyundai Heavy Industries.
Construction is scheduled to begin in early 2028, with delivery planned for mid-2029. The two ships will be the 15th and 16th vessels CLdN has ordered from HD Hyundai Heavy Industries over the past decade.
The newbuildings will feature an additional deck and increased cargo space compared with CLdN’s existing 5,000-lane-metre vessels. Their layout will be specifically optimised for trailer cargo, adding capacity and flexibility to CLdN’s RoRo and container network across Europe.
According to CLdN, the vessels will be dual-fuel capable, operating on either conventional marine diesel or LNG. They will also be designed with space for the future installation of larger electric shaft generators and batteries as the technology develops.
Although fuel consumption per vessel is expected to be broadly similar to CLdN’s existing 5,000-lane-metre ships, the increased cargo capacity is expected to improve fuel efficiency per tonne-kilometre by 30–40%, according to the company.
The vessels will also feature wide ramps providing direct access to the upper decks, allowing faster loading and unloading and supporting short turnaround times in port.
“We are delighted to extend our partnership with HD Hyundai Heavy Industries for the construction of these two new vessels,” said CLdN CEO Florent Maes. “The ships will expand the capacity of our existing fleet and will give us even greater flexibility to meet customer needs.”
CLdN said the new vessels will further support its door-to-door service across Europe while reducing the carbon footprint of transporting cargo.
