Lightcraft Ferry Project Clears Regulatory Hurdle

A new chapter is opening for energy-efficient ferry design in Denmark, as the Lightcraft ferry concept moves forward following a regulatory breakthrough.

Developed by OSK Design in collaboration with Samsø Municipality, Ærø Municipality and Bureau Veritas Marine & Offshore, the project aims to introduce a lightweight aluminium ferry tailored specifically to short-distance routes. The design combines lower operating speeds with reduced weight to significantly cut energy consumption.

Following discussions with the Danish Maritime Authority and the European Commission, the concept can now proceed under Denmark’s national regulatory framework. The alternative design can be approved provided it meets the required safety standards.

According to the project partners, the lightweight design could reduce energy consumption by 30–50% compared with a conventional steel ferry. Combined with electric propulsion, this could significantly reduce emissions from ferry operations.

The first vessel is planned for the Hou – Sælvig route, with additional ferries envisioned for the Ærøskøbing – Svendborg service.
