Spain’s competition authority, CNMC, has now approved DFDS’ acquisition of the Algeciras – Tanger Med route from Naviera Armas, and the transaction has been completed. The acquisition also includes the ferry VOLCÁN DE TAMASITE.

“The Strait of Gibraltar is an important link for trade and travel, and we are looking forward to continuing to serve the region with additional capacity. This will provide greater flexibility and enhanced connectivity for both freight and passenger customers.”

Michael Hansen, CEO of DFDS.

As part of the sale to DFDS, VOLCÁN DE TAMASITE has been renamed MARHABA SEAWAYS. From mid-November, she will be deployed on the Algeciras – Tanger Med route, operating alongside DFDS’ two RoPax ferries, KATTEGAT and TANGER EXPRESS, which are already serving the route.

“Adding a third vessel to our fleet strengthens our position in the Strait of Gibraltar and gives us greater flexibility to meet our customers’ transport needs. It also enables us to further develop our operations and support growing demand in the years ahead.”

Ronny Moriana Glindemann, Managing Director, Strait of Gibraltar, DFDS.

The acquisition of the Algeciras–Ceuta route, which was also part of the original purchase agreement, will not go ahead, as it could not be approved by the competition authorities. This also means that the fast ferry VILLA DE AGAETE is no longer part of DFDS’ acquisition and will instead be sold to another buyer.
